Zakirah
Youth Advisor - Canada
Zakirah (she/they) is a Caribbean Canadian who graduated her undergraduate studies in International Development and African studies and is now pursuing a Masters Degree in Social Anthropology at York University. She joined the Youth Advisory Council after years of working on initiatives focused on youth and planetary wellness, improving education systems, human rights advocacy and decolonization. Her research focuses are the Caribbean Migration, Transnational Motherhood, Black Experiences in Education, Black Popular Culture, and Digital Identity Building and Archives. She aims to expand our idea of research and knowledge production through her use of alternative and creative research methods. In her down time she loves to create multimedia art incorporating “waste”, sew clothing, experiment with fashion and makeup, read, hike, and camp! She plans to continue building a career in Development project management with the eventual goal of teaching. She continues to invest in these interests and pressing issues through her work with Conscious Minds Cooperative.
